There are no shortcuts to enlightenment but meditation could reduce the time it takes by many lifetimes.

And what do you, personally, reckon happens lifetime-wise when one has achieved enlightenment?
Seems to me it is an ever evolving “enlightenment” … no end … and what you “do” is chop wood and carry water… but in a more compassionate way … and the compassion is driven from inside i.e. you don't “do” it as in “act more compassionately” … but it happens as a result of your evolution, of your “seeing” and “being” …
Like if you fall in the river, you don't get out and “act wet” … you just are wet… we see egos who think they can be enlightened and try to act it… it's natural … but doesn't work like that… and so they get frustrated and torn and all messed up, relationships fail, the partner will not recognize the other as “enlightened” (because they are NOT… they are just acting) … so, so much of this drama here on Zaadz … but they want the short cut because the inner journey takes some time from ego building… and the ego wants to be king/queen and needs all the time in the day (make a list of activities to build your ego) to accomplish the goal of being king/queen… ruler of the world and convincing everyone else that the are God.
As Ian said… there are not shortcuts… and also,
“Meditation is an accident, and meditation makes us accident prone”
Also… there is meditation which is more mind activity and then there is true meditation… don't let your ego make you quit because of mistaking one for the other. One works, the other still is building ego.
Peace and meditative love for all us us poor earth bound angels.
Who was that Roshi guy who said:
“Enlightenment is an accident.
Meditation makes you accident prone.”

Daibhidh,
If your question relates to enlightenment during one particular life this, from The Milk Is White, encapsulates what I see:
It is said of Milarepa, a saint and poet of Tibet, that he was searching for enlightenment when he met and old man carrying a load. Thinking that the old man would know the answer to the question Milarepa asked him, “What is enlightenment?” The old man put down his load and stood erect and smiling. Milarepa then asked him, “What is after enlightenment?” and the old man picked up his load and went on his way, still smiling.
If your question relates to the effect of enlightenment on the cycle of death and rebirth the answer is that rebirth ends.
You ask for my personal view. All my views are personal as are anyone else's.
If I have not answered to your satisfaction please shoot again!
Donald (Earth Energy),
You have a pretty good idea of the pre-enlightenment scenario. I would ask you to consider this, “Enlightenment is a state of being.”
Donald and Cree,
Ref. “Enlightenment is an accident. Meditation makes you accident prone.” I do not see these two statements as being true - but that is only my perception.
More questions? Feel free.
Ian.
That answer was most satisfactory. -Not only because it correlates nicely with my own personal opinion, but because the analogy you gave gives me a fresh way to express what I have felt and attempted to portray in the past. Cheers!
“Enlightenment is an accident.
Meditation makes you accident prone.”
Hi cree,
I wonder whether he chose the word 'accident' so that he could use the phrase 'accident prone'? No matter, the statement has meaning with, I suspect, a sense of humour.
Ian.
if time isn't a thing, then how might it go about giving or taking shortcuts? if space isn't a thing, how much shorter could the cut be ? eccentrate. peace.
Hi James, Jimi or Jaymz,
Good thinking my friend. For all practical purposes time exist in the phenominal world, if not in reality, hence, when we talk in terms of the constructs of this world terms such as 'shortcut' are necessary to convey a point.
